Betsie gets covered

The joys of finding a straightforward insurance policy for a modified classic.

Richard Newland's VW Camper

Of course, before I even collected Betsie I had to sort out some insurance for the old boat. After checking out a couple of supposed VW Camper specialists, I found myself getting a little bit bored of all the caveats, and requirements to call them about the mods.

Then I stumbled across Lancaster Insurance (www.lancasterinsurance.co.uk), and was so relieved by the lack of complications that I bought online straight away. As well as the ease of use, it cost nothing to add my wife as a listed driver, and when it came to the mods list, all I had to do was tick the boxes that related to Betsie’s current state, whereas I’d have had to put up with discussing my mods list with some vacuous brain donor with most companies.

Betsie’s hardly a nitrous-loaded pimp wagon, but being able to simply tick for the alloys, slight lowering, towbar and roofrack made the whole process far easier – especially as it was 11 o’clock in the evening. The end quote was also £60 lower than the next cheapest – and that was without declaring the mods on the other policies. I immediately had email confirmation of my cover, and two days later all the paperwork arrived (without a single mistake). Clearly I can’t comment on what they’re like if you need to claim – and I hope I never will be able to – but hereto, they’ve been great to deal with.

Simples.

Richard Newland is editor of Fast Bikes magazine. Betsie is his 1973 VW Type 2 Bay Camper.
